Why is cottaging such a source of shame for gay men?
Many modern queers would rather forget this chapter of their past.
It was indispensable to make a move towards the other, to seek his contact directly. Before digital cruising, before apps, when homosexuality was illegal men often had no alternative whatsoever to live according to their impulses than to find themselves in public toilets, which seemed "neutral" in appearance.
These seemingly squalid, gloomy and stinking places were incredible places of social mixing. Those pictures are in the book accompanying the exhibition.
Women never enjoyed the benefits of these conveniences designed by men for men.
The first still images showed a man, later identified as Santiago, performing a test run by placing himself in front of the toilet. Today's youth unpacks everything in their online profiles, long before they even start playing with each other. Hats off!

Man who hid cameras in bathroom stalls at YouFit Gyms recorded over 400 videos
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla.
— A Pompano Beach man accused of hiding cameras in the men's bathroom stalls at YouFit Gyms across South Florida and recording hundreds of videos over the course of two months appeared in court Thursday.
Boynton Beach police said Bernardo Reyes Lopez Santiago, 30, recorded over 400 videos of about 128 victims over the course of two months.
