Since then, there has been a steady rise in the participation of queer players in sports. It could definitely be a really good year for them.

They’ll almost surely be in the top 3 teams throughout the year, so if you’re looking for a bandwagon to hop on that’s not the bandwagon (**new liberty fans I’m looking at you**) this is the one.

In terms of queer things to know, Chelsea Gray and her wife Tipsea Moorer are absolutely adorable together.

Atlanta Dream

With only two out gay players, it might seem like the dream aren’t that gay, but they are certainly going to be fun to watch.

Brittney Griner left the Mercury in the offseason after Diana Taurasi retired, and now she’s in Atlanta with her wife. Thomas is a triple-double machine who will somehow out-rebound you despite having two torn labrums. A report from Write Through the Night listed 41 active players who had come out publicly. During the post-game interview, Taurasi said, “Hold it in babe, I'm coming,” and flew back to Phoenix, arriving in time to witness Taylor giving birth to their daughter on October 9, 2021.

Rebecca Lobo summed it up brilliantly on how WNBA became accommodative as a queer affirmative league and space when she said, “When chasing the desirability of straight men and ‘Middle America’ didn’t produce the kind of prosperity the league dreamed of, the WNBA made room for the LGBT fans that had been there all along.”

In a way, the WNBA has made the acceptance of queer athletes in the hoops and sporting community to become mainstream.

Throughout history, several athletic figures had to conceal their identities due to biases as well as unfair treatment. During her detention period, both the WNBA and the LGBTQ+ community showed their strong support, which has helped her improve her position

Elena Delle Donne, the two-time WNBA MVP and skilled league legend, came out in 2016 when she revealed her engagement to Amanda Clifton, her long-term partner.

With her public announcement in 2012, she confirmed her sexuality as gay and participated in the campaign for the fight for marriage equality in America, which made major contributions to opening professional sports to the LGBTQ+ community at a time when few players were out, and also showed her support through her social media handle. That leaves Kahleah Copper as the remaining star.
