For LGBTQ+ people moving to Texas, the major metro areas seem to provide more community and safety, while avoiding very rural areas is advisable. These cities have elected LGBTQ+ officials, pride events, protections against discrimination, and thriving gay neighborhoods.
In its first week, one group’s test of the new restrictions was met with ID checks at women’s restrooms at the Capitol while the Austin City Council moved to circumvent the law’s intent.
City Council voted 5-4 to continue the temporary removal of language in its ordinance, which was initiated in September in an effort to avoid losing federal funding.
Conservative activists argue they’re protecting women and rebalancing the law that Democrats tilted in favor of LGBTQ+ people.
The population has increased 3.4% from 2010.

In order to rank the gayest cities in Texas, we used Saturday Night Science and the 2013-2018 American Community Survey from the U.S.
Census.
Unfortunately, the Census has stopped reporting at the city level, so this report reflects the most recent data.

While acceptance is growing overall, attitudes can vary widely depending on what part of the state you are in.
At the direction of Gov. Greg Abbott, state transportation officials told local leaders to remove crosswalk art often used to mark historically LGBTQ+ neighborhoods or risk losing millions in funding.
Senate Bill 8, which now heads to the House floor, would restrict which bathrooms in government buildings transgender people would be allowed to use.
The court split 6-3 along ideological lines on a case from Tennessee.
Real estate prices drive most of the variance in cost of living around Texas. The data comes from the American Community Survey 2013-2018 vintage, which breaks down sex by household status. Rural areas and smaller towns tend to be more socially conservative and less welcoming. Texas is currently enacting more anti-trans laws, so that is a major concern.
Major cities like Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas tend to be more progressive and LGBTQ+ friendly. About two dozen states have similar bans in place.
Students are concerned the legislation could silence supportive teachers, dismantle safe spaces, lead to overenforcement and prevent honest conversations about identity.
The Senate voted Wednesday to give initial approval to a bill that would require buildings, including public schools and universities, among others to segregate private facilities, like bathrooms, by sex.
Paxton’s office launched an investigation into the district’s policy after an administrator was caught on tape discussing a possible loophole in the state’s ban.
The move comes a few weeks after the Texas A&M System issued a similar ban, which is being challenged in court.
