    Sex work is big and—unfortunately, yet again—controversial news in San Francisco at the moment, as the city fruitlessly attempts to shut down Capp Street’s thriving trade with actual concrete barriers.

    Who were they putting in danger? And if masculinity seems chained to heterosexuality, that’s because the people in power built a world where “effeminate” was treated like a prison sentence. Storytelling is a survival strategy, it creates kinship and transforms their circumstances. [laughs] You really felt the impact of queer family in her stories. So the idea that straight-identified men having sex with men is something new or a product of “sexual confusion” is not only false—it’s historically illiterate and willfully ignorant.

    Sexual identity is a modern invention.

    Trade refers to sexual behavior, not sexual orientation. Rechy was able to escape.

    But trade never vanished.

    After attended college and a stint in the army, Rechy began traveling around the United States, earning money by being a gay hustler. Neighborhood associations, business owners, and the police were trying to “clean up” the area and basically demolishing the queer culture that had been there for decades.

    Eventually, the term narrowed in scope.

    It was unpredictable: for the men selling sex and the men paying for it.

    These encounters happened on the fly: daylight or dark, in back seats, cheap hotels, parks, docks, alleys, and public toilets. The word simply gave a name to something that had always been happening.

    The Original Meaning of “Trade”

    In early British queer slang—specifically Polari, a coded language used for survival under anti-homosexuality laws—trade first meant a casual male sexual partner.
